Credit for Prior Learning

Students learn in a variety of ways and through a multitude of experiences. A student who believes that he or she already possesses the knowledge and/or skills taught in certain courses or programs offered by Dallas College may have these learning experiences assessed and then be granted equivalent college credit. This is called Prior Learning Assessment.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

PLA includes all processes that Dallas College uses to review, assess, and evaluate evidence of learning and to award academic credit per administrative and academic standards.

Such learning might be through formal or informal means:

  • College transcripts
  • Licenses
  • Professional certifications
  • Workplace training and credentials recognized in workforce
  • Military training
  • Experiential learning
  • Standardized exams and testing
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Learning from institutions not formally accredited
  • Independent learning
  • Third party organizations crosswalks and recommendations

Credit, certification, or advanced standing may be earned when an authorized assessment is satisfactorily verified and approved. Students are responsible to petition for a prior learning assessment and all Dallas College policies will apply. A PLA request must be applicable to a chosen degree program. PLA is a strategy to prove what students already know and the college will then review, verify, credential or grant credit when allowable.

The number of equivalent credits awarded may not exceed 25% of the total number of credits required for the specific degree or certificate.
