This award combines classroom teaching with supervised clinical and field experience for medical professionals seeking certification as a Paramedic with the Texas Department of State Health Services. The student will be introduced to patient assessment, airway, medical, pediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics, and trauma management from a pre-hospital care perspective along with the psychomotor skills to support these activities.
An associate's degree or higher in the health care discipline is required. Students must:
- Fulfill all requirements for admission to both the college and the EMS Program.
- Submit a completed admission application packet to the EMS program office at Brookhaven campus on or before the enrollment period deadline. Information appointments are available to further discuss the application process and required documentation for the program.
- Provide proof of immunizations.
- Purchase professional liability insurance unless provided by employer with a letter on file. Students cannot attend clinical without Professional liability insurance that is valid throughout the course.
- Have a current valid professional license as a physician, physician assistant, nurse, or respiratory therapist AND a minimum of 24 months of patient care in an emergency department or critical care unit within the past five years.
Student must have:
- A current valid certificate of completion of an Emergency Care and Safety Institute, American Red Cross, or American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) for Professional Rescuers/Healthcare Providers course.
- A current valid certificate of completion of an American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support course (ACLS).
Upon successful completion of the first 48 contact hours section of the program, students are eligible to take the National Registry of EMT exam for the EMT basic level. Documentation of successful completion must be submitted prior to advanced-level clinical assignments (EMSP 2265).
Those who are successful continue their course work for the award at the paramedic level. Completers are then eligible to take the exam for registration as a Paramedic through the National Registry of EMT. Upon successful completion of that examination, the student is eligible to apply for certification as a Paramedic in the State of Texas.
Students must test, and earn, the EMT-Basic NREMT registration, or DSHS certification, during this course, AND prior to beginning the advanced clinical assignments (EMSP 2463). Students will attend two 24-hour ambulance basic-level internships; AND, when eligible, eight to ten, 24-hour MICU-ambulance advanced-level internships. Uniforms are required for clinical and internship sessions.
Texas certified EMT's enrolled in the Brookhaven campus Paramedic Program are eligible for credit for EMSP 1501 and EMSP 1164.
A minimum grade of "C" or better for ALL EMSP courses is required.

Applicants must:
- Fulfill all requirements for admission to both the college and the EMS Program.
- Meet the State TSI requirements.
- Complete the prerequisite course in Anatomy and Physiology.
- Submit a completed admission application packet to the EMS program office at Brookhaven campus on or before the enrollment period deadline. Information appointments are available to further discuss the application process and required documentation for the program.
Upon successful completion of all course work for the degree, the student is eligible to take the exam for registration as a Paramedic through the National Registry of EMT. Upon successful completion of that examination, the student is eligible to apply for certification or license as a Paramedic in the State of Texas.
Texas certified EMTs enrolled in the Brookhaven campus Paramedic Program are eligible for credit for EMSP 1501 and EMSP 1164.
Prerequisite: Documentation of successful completion of the National Registry of EMT exam must be submitted prior to registration. Paramedic candidates must show proof of more than six months of active (two or more patient encounters/24 hrs) EMS experience; OR have completed the BHC EMT basic program in the preceding two semesters; OR successfully completed (score of 70% or higher) the paramedic Entrance Exam administered through FISDAP. A current valid certificate of completion of an Emergency Care and Safety Institute, American Red Cross, or American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) for Professional Rescuers/Healthcare Providers is required to enroll in any EMSP class and clinical/internships.

This Level 1 Certificate combines classroom teaching with supervised clinical and field experience for those seeking certification as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic with the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Upon successful completion of all course work for the certificate, the student is eligible to take the exam for registration as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic through the National Registry of EMT. Upon successful completion of that examination, the student is eligible to apply for certification as an EMT-Basic in the State of Texas.
Prerequisite: (1) A current certificate of completion of an American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Providers (or equivalent) is required to enroll in any EMSP class and clinical/internships.
A language elective particularly Spanish and American Sign Language are recommended for the professional EMS provider.
A minimum grade of "C" or better for ALL EMSP courses is required.

The Paramedic Certificate option is for students already certified as Emergency Medical Technicians. Potential students will be considered on an individual basis to determine if they have an adequate educational and EMS background.
This certificate is in compliance with the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Commission on Accreditation of EMS Programs (CoAEMSP). It includes classroom, laboratory and practicum (clinical and field instruction) which shall include supervised experiences in multiple hospital departments as well as with a licensed EMS provider and in other settings as needed to develop the competencies defined in the EMS National Standard curriculum.
NOTE: Classes are offered as cohort based with students expected to start and finish in their particular cohort. These cohorts will be offered at night, shift-based, and fast-track/academy style lasting between 7 and 13 months.
