Introduction to Digital Forensics

Prerequisite: ITSC 1405, ITSC 1425, or instructor approval.
Course Description: A study of the application of forensic science and technology to collect, analyze, document, and present after-the-fact digital information from digital sources while maintaining a documented chain of custody to determine exactly what happened on a digital device. Overview of ethics, white collar crime, HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, and other legal guidelines/regulations/laws. Includes overview of tools used for forensic analysis of digital devices seized in investigations. Also covers securing a search warrant, collecting digital evidence, protecting digital evidence, and obtaining information from offenders. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Digital Data Storage Forensics

Course Description: Exploration, examination, and assessment of the characteristics and details of digital storage media used in computers systems and small-scale digital devices, such as cell phones, cameras, DVRs, PDAs, websites and other devices. Includes experimenting with various open source tools to reinforce identification of evidentiary data. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Introduction to Cyber Crime

Prerequisite: ITDF 1300 or instructor approval.
Course Description: An examination of the history of cyber crime and techniques and strategies for investigating computer crime will be the focus of this course. Emphasis is placed on identifying cyber crime activity and applying the concepts, theories and laws of computer crime to the conduct of investigations. (3 Lec.)

Course Description: A study of how to obtain digital evidence of a device and from network messages and logs while preserving the evidentiary chain. Includes the legal aspects of the search and seizure of computers and related equipment/information. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Course Description: Skills-based course in the applications of major forensic hardware and software tools such as EnCase, ILook, Forensic Tool Kit, write blockers, StegAlyzerSS, "X-Ways" forensic software, ProDiscover Basic, and others. (3 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Comprehensive Digital Forensics Project

Prerequisite: ITDF 2320, ITDF 2425, and ITDF 2330.
Course Description: Comprehensive application of skills learned in previous digital forensics courses in a simulated crime scene or workplace investigation. Includes collection, analysis, and presentation of digital data and evidence in a problem-based case study format. This course is used as a capstone course for a certificate or degree. Financial Cyber Crime
This is a Local Need Course.
Prerequisite: ITDF 1370.
Course Description: This course covers and explores the areas of economic cyber crime. Emphasis is placed on crimes that are being committed using computers, networks and the Internet and their impact to businesses. Attacks on networks of businesses have resulted in large monetary losses, compromised customer privacy and fraudulent activity. (4 Lec.)

Internship for Digital Forensics
This is a Local Need Course.
Prerequisite: Students might be required to pass a criminal background check before beginning internship.
Course Description: This course provides experience in digital forensics in either the public or private sector. Emphasis is placed on student involvement with business or government agencies dealing with digital forensic analysis or investigation. Upon completion, students should be able to successfully analyze a real-world computer forensic operation and convey the results to the client in written and verbal form. A learning plan is developed by the college and the employer. (18 Ext.)
