Pharmacology of Addiction

Course Description: Psychological, physiological, and sociological effects of mood altering substances and behaviors and their implications for the addiction process are discussed. Emphasis on pharmacological effects of tolerance, dependency/withdrawal, cross addiction, and drug addiction. (3 Lec.)

Counseling Theories

Course Description: An introduction to major theories of various treatment modalities including Reality Therapy, Psycho-dynamic, grief therapy, Client-centered therapy, Rational-Emotive Therapy, Cognitive-behavioral approaches such as life skills training, behavior modification, and the introduction to experimental therapies as they relate to detoxification, residential, outpatient, and extended treatment. Ethical issues will be reviewed. (3 Lec.)

Introduction to Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions

Course Description: This course will focus on special skills and techniques in the application of counseling skills for the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) client. Practicum (or Field Experience) - Substance Abuse/Addiction Counseling

Prerequisite: DAAC 1304, DAAC 2307, DAAC 1311, DAAC 2341, DAAC 2343, SCWK 1305, and SCWK 2301.
Course Description: Practical, general workplace training supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student. This is a work-based learning experience that helps students gain practical experience, enhanced skills, and integrated knowledge in the discipline. Direct supervision will be provided by a clinical professional. A roundtable seminar is mandatory. (21 Ext.)
