  • Students pursuing this certificate are waived from the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standards, but must meet course prerequisites.
  • Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction by the college awarding the degree.

Degree Plan Code: C1.EMS.EMTBASIC.11

This Level 1 Certificate combines classroom teaching with supervised clinical and field experience for those seeking certification as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic with the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Upon successful completion of all course work for the certificate, the student is eligible to take the exam for registration as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic through the National Registry of EMT. Upon successful completion of that examination, the student is eligible to apply for certification as an EMT-Basic in the State of Texas.

Prerequisite: (1) A current certificate of completion of an American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Providers (or equivalent) is required to enroll in any EMSP class and clinical/internships. (2) Demonstrated competency in DMAT 0090, DREA 0091, and DWRI 0091.

A language elective particularly Spanish and American Sign Language are recommended for the professional EMS provider.

MATH, ENGLISH, SPEECH REQUIREMENTS NOTE: Students must choose one math class from the list and one from the Speech/English list for a total of at least 6 credit hours.

+Speech OR English Requirement - must be selected from the following:

SPCH 1311 Introduction to Speech Communication 3
SPCH 1315 Fundamentals of Public Speaking 3
ENGL 1301 Composition I 3

++Math Elective--student must take MATH 1314 or any higher level MATH course.

NOTE: Students enrolling in this program who plan to transfer to a four-year institution should consult an advisor or counselor regarding transfer requirements and the transferability of these courses to the four-year institution of their choice.
