Course Description: Focuses on performance improvement and quality management in health care. Theories fundamental to Total Quality Management (TQM) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) are explored and applied to the health care setting. Evolution of efforts to measure quality in healthcare organizations and attitudes of physicians concerning these efforts are examined. Statistical tools and use of CQI teams are described. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO) Performance Improvement Standards are covered, with emphasis on expectations of the medical staff organization. The description of a hospital risk management program and National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) required monitors are also reviewed. (3 Lec.) |
